National Children’s Museum is a world-class institution dedicated to sparking children’s imaginations and encouraging them to dream big. Located steps off the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue, National Children’s Museum celebrates the joy of childhood through playful science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) exhibits and programs. As the Junior Graphic Designer, you will help realize this vision for hundreds of thousands of in-person and virtual visitors who engage with the Museum each year.

What you’ll do:

As Junior Graphic Designer, reporting to the Senior Manager of Brand + Marketing, you are a critical member of the External Affairs Team. You will support the Museum’s marketing initiatives by creating graphics for a variety of mediums, and engaging as a thought partner to bring the Museum’s brand to life and promote its ongoing offerings, as well as special exhibits, programs, and events. This role will provide numerous opportunities for experimentation and exploration, and would be best suited for someone who is self-motivated and enjoys a fast-paced environment.

  • Execute advertising buys by communicating with vendors and creating artwork for both out-of-home and digital buys, under the direction of the Senior Manager of Brand + Marketing;

  • Act as a primary point of contact for on-site installations. Off-site installations will at times be necessary;

  • Create web optimized assets for the Museum’s website and assist in the layout and building of web pages’

  • Support the creation of print collateral and signage for Museum operations, special events, and programs;

  • Help create branded social graphics for all Museum platforms, including assets for stories and ad placements;

  • Support the creation of branded merchandise and packaging for the Museum gift shop;

  • Create video assets for promotional and fundraising initiatives, including light video editing;

  • Manage workflows and communicate timeline and processes to cross-departmental teams;

  • Support other institutional and strategic projects as needed and other duties as assigned. 

What we believe are important experiences and traits for this role:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Graphic Design or related field;

  • At least 1-3  years of relevant experience creating graphics in one or more of the following mediums: advertising and marketing design, illustration, publication and typographic design, and packaging design;

  • Must be proficient with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign;

  • Basic knowledge of Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro;

  • Prior experience with HTML and CSS is a plus;

  • Must be a creative, detail-oriented thinker;

  • Excellent critical thinking skills; ability to balance multiple time-critical projects and pivot quickly;

  • Highly organized self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and deadline-driven environment;

  • Team player who values a collaborative working environment;

  • Passion for the mission of National Children’s Museum;

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check;

  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (at least two-doses of an FDA approved vaccination).

Hours:

Full-time, 40 hours/week position. Must be available to work at least 4 days per week in person. Weekend availability and some travel is periodically required.
