We are looking for an R&D Software Engineer to build, from the ground up, patient-specific anatomical simulations for our market-defining surgical navigation platform.

This role presents the unique opportunity to use computer graphics, computer vision, and physical simulation to make an impact on clinical care. You will also have ample opportunities to communicate your work in peer-reviewed journals and white papers.

Your first year at Illuminant will involve working in a team of committed clinicians and engineers in defining and building our product. You will help set up demonstrations in real operating rooms and will build software alongside our team of surgeons. You will work on topics across physical simulation, rendering, projection mapping, point cloud registration, medical image segmentation, and 3D sensing.

Our ideal candidate is intrinsically motivated by the novel applications of their engineering skills towards medicine. They will have deep experience in working with graphics engines and 3D sensors, with a strong background in computer graphics, computer vision, and physical simulations. They will be fluent in C++. Python, and Unity, and they value modern, high-quality code development practices. They are energized by the accelerated growth, deep autonomy, and trajectory-setting impact that comes with joining as an early engineer.

To excel in this role, you will have worked on graphical and simulation applications in the past and take pride in creating product specifications, making engineering tradeoffs, and communicating your technical ideas with teammates.

📝 What You Will Do

  • Architect, implement, test, debug, optimize, and deploy end-to-end anatomical simulations and computer vision pipelines, working at all levels from optics and sensors to tuning optimization algorithms.
  • Make design tradeoffs and translate product features into engineering specifications and projects.
  • Collaborate with and support other teammates in part selection, system integration, and system debug efforts.
  • Propose and lead future software development efforts.
  • Maintain comprehensive architecture and design documentation.
  • Communicate technical ideas in written and oral media, such as peer-reviewed papers, company blogs, and invited talks.

🏅 Your Qualifications

  • Committed to learning and using new skills to get the job done.
  • Excellent foundation in computer graphics, computer vision, and physical simulation.
  • Excellent fluency in (and intricate knowledge of) C++, C#, Python.
  • Deep experience with computer graphics, rendering systems, and shaders.
  • Deep experience with modern 3D graphics engines, such as Unity.
  • Deep experience with 3D imaging modalities (stereo, structured light, time of flight) and working with 3D data.
  • Deep experience with object recognition and tracking, object registration, image segmentation, and pose estimation.
  • Deep experience with computer vision libraries (e.g. OpenCV).
  • Comfortable with reading relevant research papers and synthesizing new insights.
  • Comfortable with optimizing algorithms for latency, throughput, and hardware constraints.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical or real-time systems a plus.
  • Familiarity with medical and clinical applications a plus.
  • Familiarity with dynamic projection mapping a plus.
  • Academic publications in CVPR, NeurIPS, ICCP, ICCV a plus.
  • Preferred MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Preferred 3+ years of industry experience.
