Did you know that methane is responsible for around 30% of the current rise in global temperature? And a big chunk are easily avoidable through fixing leaks in oil and gas infrastructure. But the missing piece is detection and measurement of fugitive and persistent emissions. Orbio uses satellite imagery to track methane emissions from the oil & gas industry, and is part of a wider global mobilisation to quantify and mitigate methane emissions. We are on a mission to accelerate the low-carbon transition through emissions intelligence, and we are looking for an expert in computer vision to join.

It’s an exciting time to join us: after 1.5 years of deep research, we launched our first methane emissions product that already outperforms the entire methane technology market. In the last 3 months we closed large contracts with some of the biggest customers in the finance & energy industry, and raised a Seed round with some of the most exciting investors in the world: Y Combinator, Initialized Capital, the Collaborative Fund, and the European Space Agency.

On the role

We are on the lookout for a passionate Data Engineer who loves building, maintaining and optimising processing pipelines, data structures, and cloud infrastructure. There is flexibility in the scope and level of seniority of this role, we will focus on hiring the most talented candidate and adjust the role if needed. You’ll jump into our team of scientists and engineers to maintain & improve our Methane Intelligence pipeline on processing geospatial data for detecting methane emissions.

What you’d be getting involved in:

Collaborating with data scientists, software engineers and product managers at Orbio to:

  1. Contribute to and peer-review parts of our existing and future processing systems for Methane Intelligence, especially around processing speed, data structure efficiency and stability
  2. Ensure the scalability, performance and reliability of our Methane Intelligence processing systems in production and development environments by contributing to and peer-reviewing parts of our cloud infrastructure (in collaboration with our DevOps Engineer)

What we are looking for:

  • Experience with complex processing algorithms for geospatial applications;
  • Really solid quantitative reasoning and communication skills;
  • Willingness to learn from others, collaborate, give and receive constructive feedback, and share your knowledge with the team;
  • Proficiency with python and cloud infrastructure;
  • Experience working with geospatial data;
  • Solid experience with software engineering best practices in a collaborative setting (version control, testing, code reviews, Agile, etc.);
  • Projects in research or industry that demonstrate relevant skills (former jobs, PhDs, publications, private projects).

What would be even nicer:

  • Experience working with Sentinel 2 and other satellite data;
  • Domain expertise in methane or adjacent topics;
  • Foundations in deep learning, optimization, denoising, signal processing, geostatistics or time-series analysis;
  • Experience with Auto Scaling systems (e.g. Nomad);
  • Leadership experience in industry;

What you can expect from Orbio:

  • A highly dynamic startup environment with lots of opportunities to learn, grow, thrive and take ownership with support from talented and empathetic team mates
  • Getting access to the resources and attending business development training of the startup ecosystems of Y Combinator, Imperial College, Google (Google for Startups) and Microsoft (AI for Earth)
  • Competitive Salary + Stock Options

We are a remote-first company and emphasise the importance of time and location flexibility for everybody on the team. However, we operate in CET and expect people to be reachable within those business hours.
