Introduction

Bloom is a new startup incubated by Eido Studios in San Diego, California. We’re looking for an iOS developer to be the first engineer to join our team and work with our founder to design and build our product from napkin sketch to shipping app. Our app will capture and save sounds — specifically, human voices — and allow us all to learn more about the people in our lives in a fun, game-like way. In a sense, the app will save people, and over time, we think it can save everyone. This is a fully remote position and will be a full-time, long-term contract to start, with the opportunity to transition to full-time employment as the company grows.

What you’ll do

  • Be the developer who creates our native iOS application and takes it from idea to shipped product
  • Help our founder and CEO shape Bloom’s vision, product strategy, and feature set
  • Work with our founding designer to create a lively and delightful user experience that puts a smile on our users’ faces and keeps them coming back for more
  • Build the app with iOS technologies that make it accessible to everyone
  • Set up and manage the app's submissions to Apple's App Store
  • Collaborate with our backend engineer to design the client-server communication architecture and protocols
  • Help define our engineering and product culture and processes
  • Do all of this in a startup environment with limited resources 😀

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience building native iOS apps in the consumer/social space
  • A passion for building great products that make people happy
  • A preference for hand-crafting great, native iOS apps instead of “iOS” apps built with cross-platform frameworks
  • Proficiency with the table stakes (Swift, Objective-C, UIKit, SwiftUI, iOS HIG)
  • An intense hunger to create a Apple-Design-Award-worthy iOS app (previous experience creating a Apple-Design-Award-winning iOS app is also acceptable 😉)
  • Experience releasing and maintaining one or more iOS apps in the App Store
  • Experience integrating with remote data on cloud services via REST or JSON
  • A desire to build apps in an ethical way that respects user privacy
  • Familiarity with the common practices and systems of iOS development, including source control systems, unit and integration testing, linting and instrumentation tools, etc. (i.e., the other table stakes)
  • A passion for writing good code
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • A comfort with working in a startup environment as the sole developer on the team (until we grow, which you’ll help us do)

Bonus points for...

  • Having a knack for good UX and UI design
  • Experience using the core iOS audio frameworks (Core Audio, AVFoundation, Audio Toolbox, Audio Units)
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, Amazon Transcribe, or similar
  • Creating apps with user interfaces that go beyond combinations of the standard components
  • Open source contributions
  • Developing apps for Android and mobile web 🦄

Please include with your application

  • Your CV or LinkedIn profile
  • A link to your GitHub public profile or other location that includes examples of code you wrote
  • A list of publicly-available iOS mobile applications on which you were the primary developer or played a significant development role
  • Three examples of what you would consider to be “great” iOS apps
  • A sentence or two about why Bloom is interesting to you
