What to expect:
As an Industrial Designer, each day can look very different from the last. Whether you’re sketching concepts in response to a brief, exploring forms with foam/clay, refining concepts in CAD, or creating a photorealistic render, you’ll be helping Silgan Dispensing achieve its goals. Our team is at the core of the company’s strategy, and we do what it takes to help deliver upon that.
An Industrial Designer at Silgan Dispensing is responsible for taking a project from the initial brief through to production. He/she will:
Own relationship with Internal and External Customers to better understand project goals and opportunities
Work with Marketing Insights and/or conduct design research to explore consumer, customer and market needs and to immerse in the project to inspire ideation
Work independently OR lead ideation with the broader Design and/or Innovation team members to create sketch concepts
Create concept prototypes to test working theories, ergonomics, intuitiveness, styling aspects of concept designs; create client ready prototypes of refined concepts to share with internal and external customers
Work with Marketing Insights and/or key customers to evaluate and refine concepts
Collaborate with Product Development, Molding, and Assembly Engineers to optimize manufacturability, cost, and sustainability of product solutions
Problem-solve design and technical issues in order to find balance between manufacturing and consumer needs
Create compelling product renderings, concept presentations, and other visual collateral to help sell in designs and drive towards effective decision making around design options
Create basic timelines for work, negotiate project deliverable timing with internal stakeholders, meet and/or exceed timing and work quality expectations
Provide project updates and next steps at regular intervals for project teams, keeping project teams up to date with progress and identifying challenges as they arise
Support for Sales and Marketing needs, including stock product renders and graphic label creation
Ideal Candidate Should Have:
5 years+ industry experience as an Industrial Designer in product and/or packaging design
Prior experience designing for injection molding and/or other plastics manufacturing processes
Interest in how things work, desire to better understand materials and manufacturing processes
Experience navigating relationships within large organizations and/or dynamic customer relationships
Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills and a proven track record of using these to design better product solutions
Ability to design with the consumer in mind, experience utilizing consumer research to drive design concepts and refinement
Prior experience designing to optimize ergonomics, intuitiveness, and overall physical experience of product and/or packaging design
Strong product styling capabilities, ability to design for different brands, consumers and regions
Experience developing compelling concept/mood boards to inspire creative ideation
Divergent thinker, capable of generating a multitude of ideas to address a design brief
Strong sketching skills with ability to convey ideas in real time with colleagues and well as prepare easy to interpret and inspired sketches for client meetings
Strong interpersonal skills, including effective communication and respect for others
Ability to “tell the story” of how concepts were developed and create a pitch for product ideas utilizing strong verbal and visual presentation skills
Ability to flex between working independently and collaboratively
Proactive attitude, proven track record of meeting deadlines and engaging in next steps to drive projects forward
Proficient in CAD modeling using Solidworks - strong surface modeling skills required for this position
Proficient in KeyShot or similar rendering software with ability to create photorealism for customer presentations
Proficient in Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator for basic graphic mock-up creation and presentation materials
