Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a dynamic Software Engineer in Cloud Engineering to work as part of its National Security Directorate Computing and Analytics Division. Cloud Engineering at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) addresses critical national and global issues by developing data processing/storage systems utilizing cloud, parallel and distributed architectures. We provide capabilities in data pipelines, ETL, applied analytics, large scale data repositories, and integrations with mission driven solutions. You will work as part of an expert team that, for more than 50 years, has been advancing the frontiers of science and engineering in the service of our nation and the world in the areas of energy, the environment, and national security.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify mission challenges and formulate cloud engineering solutions methodically
  • Demonstrate outstanding verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment

  • Interest and/or experience mentoring junior scientists and engineers

  • Ability to work with different technologies

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience

-OR-Relevant Associate’s degree and 6 years of relevant work experience High school diploma and 10 years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in designing or deploying large-scale and high-performance AWS, Azure, and/or GCP cloud based systems with reliable monitoring and logging practices.
  • 2+ years Python/Scala/Java development experience
  • Strong understanding of software engineering best practices
  • Strong cloud architecture and implementation experience
  • Cloud certifications a plus
  • Familiar with machine learning algorithms and having hands-on experience in machine learning pipeline development is a plus.
  • Active Federal Q Clearance and ability to maintain such clearance

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
