Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a dynamic Software Engineer in DevOps to work as part of its National Security Directorate Computing and Analytics Division. DevOps Engineering at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) addresses critical national and global issues by developing highly automated deployment capabilities using Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), automated unit, integration, and security testing, and rigorous software development/deployment patterns. You will work as part of an expert team that, for more than 50 years, has been advancing the frontiers of science and engineering in the service of our nation and the world in the areas of energy, the environment, and national security.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge of software engineering practices (e.g. source control, problem tracking, design principles, etc.) with minimal oversight
  • Take initiative to set personal direction and goals
  • Stay current about industry developments
  • Work collaboratively within a team to execute on the full system development life cycle
  • Maintain or follow quality assurance procedures
  • Demonstrate good time management skills
  • Be able to work with different technologies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, or related field with seven years of experience, Master’s degree with five years of experience, or PhD with three years of experience in like field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience programming in at least one object-oriented programming language such as Python, Java, C#, or C++ 8+ years of DevOps experience (Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code)
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices and software project lifecycles
  • Perform unit testing and system integration testing of the newly developed functionality.
  • Help set development standards in areas of best practices, code quality, test coverage, monitoring, logging, exception management, and others.
  • Experience with big data platforms a plus
  • Experience with cloud platforms a plus
  • Experience code analysis tools a plus (SonarCube, Fortify, Twistlock, etc.)
  • Active Federal Q Clearance and ability to maintain such clearance

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
