The Senior Industrial Designer at SUMR Brands independently drives his or her own projects while also helping to guide the rest of the ID staff. This individual also promotes cross-pollination between the various teams within our Design & Development department to ensure that all disciplines are heading along the same vector. The goal is to help define our design language and product DNA, while pushing us to innovate and expand into new categories. Should be self-driven, flexible, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment. This position develops the concepts and appearance of products without compromising on functionality and quality, keeping the point of product safety in mind as it is a point of high consideration while designing. The position confers with multiple teams cross-functionally including: Sales, Product Management, Marketing, Project Management/Engineering and Fashion, as well as Global Vendor partners to establish, evaluate design concepts from inception through manufacturing and commercialization.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for all stages of Design development from concepts through the prototyping and testing phases, into 3D models, and ultimately to production
Drive our growth into new product categories through competitive landscaping and user research
Work with our manufacturing partners to ensure our designs become realities
Lead staff-level Industrial Designers through their projects, help develop their toolboxes, and drive group brainstorms
Concept generation – Using SketchBook, renderings, and various prototyping methods and mechanical engineering principles to create concepts for review and evaluation.
Design – with awareness of manufacturability, product scope, schedule and within cost targets. Propose design solutions to meet market and business opportunity. Will function from start to finish, including definition, concept generation, design for manufacturability, tooling, production, to delivery.
Prototyping – Prototype at various pre-determined development phases for internal and consumer validation for proof of concept. Utilize internal model shop and external resources for prototyping as needed.
Quality, Compliance & Safety – Align with Quality, Compliance, & Safety to design, validate, and document as needed.
Consumer Validation – Assist with preparing for consumer validation and participate in validation as needed.
Commercialization – As needed, support extra sketches/renderings for successful launch.
Internal Selling – As needed, participate in internal launch and product training to all external facing employees.
Post-Audit – Participate in post-audit to identify areas of improvement.

Technical / Professional skills and Expertise
Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, or equivalent
5+ years of hands-on industrial design experience, preferably with high-volume consumer goods, consumer electronics, or accessories
Experience as a lead of a team or on long-term projects
Proficiency with and ability to communicate industrial design intent through common design tools CAD tools (Solidworks or Creo preferred), Keyshot, and Adobe CS
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
Ability to quickly conceptualize ideas. Exceptional sketching and visualization skills.
Strong understanding of design principles and sensed of brand aesthetics with a sensitivity to form detail and surfacing
Experience with different materials and strong understanding of the manufacturing processes
Embraces a hands-on approach with lots of quick prototyping
Passion for product and desire to innovate
