James Madison University (JMU) invites applications and nominations for Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA).  Reporting to the Provost, and serving on the senior academic leadership team, the Dean provides academic, intellectual, administrative, strategic, and budgetary leadership for the College, and supports academic unit self-governance.  In collaboration with academic unit heads, the Dean promotes and fosters a highly stimulating and creative learning environment for an accomplished faculty and student body, embracing diverse artistic expression and scholarly activity.  The Dean champions the arts at JMU through recruitment, development, inclusion, mentorship, and retention of diverse and highly qualified faculty, students and staff.  The Dean represents the College to internal and external constituents and advocates for faculty and student interests through external fundraising.  As a transformative leader, the Dean works with colleagues throughout campus and surrounding communities to facilitate innovation, creativity, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and engagement in teaching and learning, scholarship, and service.  Working collaboratively with University Advancement, the Dean is an active partner in developing philanthropic resources to support the college.


CVPA offers degrees in nine undergraduate and five graduate programs across three schools:  Art, Design, and Art History; Music; and Theatre and Dance.  CVPA has state-of-the-art facilities including the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts and the recently renovated Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art, studios, and fabrication labs.  It also houses the Madison Art Collection, the Center for Inclusive Music Engagement, and the Institute for Creative Inquiry.  The College has 111 full-time faculty, 29 staff, 1,270 undergraduate majors, and 80 graduate students.  Additional information may be found at


JMU seeks a dynamic, strategic, and collaborative individual to lead the College with integrity and humility.  The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in a relevant discipline, and a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and university or professional experience commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor within CVPA.

Harrisonburg is a growing city of about 50,000 residents, located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  The area is a popular tourist, resort, and retirement area thanks to its great scenic beauty, wealth of outdoor activities, and proximity to Washington, Richmond, and Roanoke, each about two hours away.  Harrisonburg is one of the most diverse communities in Virginia, with over 40 nationalities represented in the public schools, an annual international festival, and a variety of restaurants and shops serving the international community.  Harrisonburg is part of a larger economic and cultural region that includes Staunton, Waynesboro, and Charlottesville.
