James Madison University (JMU) invites applications and nominations for Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). Reporting to the Provost, and serving on the senior academic leadership team, the Dean provides academic, intellectual, administrative, strategic, and budgetary leadership for the College, and supports academic unit self-governance. In collaboration with academic unit heads, the Dean promotes and fosters a highly stimulating and creative learning environment for an accomplished faculty and student body, embracing diverse artistic expression and scholarly activity. The Dean champions the arts at JMU through recruitment, development, inclusion, mentorship, and retention of diverse and highly qualified faculty, students and staff. The Dean represents the College to internal and external constituents and advocates for faculty and student interests through external fundraising. As a transformative leader, the Dean works with colleagues throughout campus and surrounding communities to facilitate innovation, creativity, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and engagement in teaching and learning, scholarship, and service. Working collaboratively with University Advancement, the Dean is an active partner in developing philanthropic resources to support the college.
CVPA offers degrees in nine undergraduate and five graduate programs across three schools: Art, Design, and Art History; Music; and Theatre and Dance. CVPA has state-of-the-art facilities including the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts and the recently renovated Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art, studios, and fabrication labs. It also houses the Madison Art Collection, the Center for Inclusive Music Engagement, and the Institute for Creative Inquiry. The successful candidate will possess a terminal degree in a relevant discipline, and a strong record of teaching, scholarship, and university or professional experience commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor within CVPA.
