Output has made a name for itself as one of the fastest growing, creative, and influential music-making software companies in the world. In an industry full of retro nostalgia and cloning real life products, Output stands out as a groundbreaker by building new things that have never existed before but should. The likes of Kendrick Lamar, Bjork, Rihanna, James Blake, Imagine Dragons, Zedd, Justin Timberlake, Nine Inch Nails, Drake and many more use our software to write music as well as hit shows and films like Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, and Black Panther.
We are currently working remotely and will continue to do so until it is safe to return to our office in Los Angeles. Once we are able to return it will be on a voluntary basis only. Our culture has always valued our employee’s work-life balance and we offer 5 weeks of PTO, excellent health care, and a community of music enthusiasts- with access to our music studios (once it is safe to return).
As we transition from a more drawn out waterfall model to an agile one that ships more frequent and iterative improvements, the speed at which we ship is paramount. A thoroughly maintained design system will play a crucial role in the speed at which we ship new features. We need you to take the lead to ensure our Design System is maintained and used properly.
This Design System Lead role will work closely with our other product designers, junior designers, and engineers to establish a holistic system for using and expanding our current design system.
Success in this role will be increasing the velocity at which we ship new features and ideas while maintaining a measurable level of design quality and consistency.
For the interview, please be prepared to walk us through an example of a Design System in its various stages and what work you specifically did to help mature and scale the system. Be prepared to talk about challenges, roadblocks and how you overcame them.
Be prepared to show a high level of organization and how you were able to increase clarity and efficiency for both design and engineering teams to work more seamlessly together.
Interaction design, animation and prototyping took a backseat at Output for a long time. This was mostly due to the limitations in the tech for the plugin products we were making at the time. Now that we’ve moved to more mature frameworks for our products we need to reach a new and expected level of quality in the products we’re making. Interaction design, animations and micro interactions should play a large role in the future of our products and we think this can be established and standardized better through our design system.
You should be able to realize high level visual designs and interactions to a production standard of UI design, ready to hand off to developers for implementation.
Please prepare examples of your work and be prepared to talk about the importance of the visual design to the functionality, and demonstrate a high standard for aesthetic design (these can be separate examples).
Our designs rely heavily on passing usability tests from users, feasibility tests from developers, and approval from stakeholders. One of the best ways to do this is by designing as close to the final product as possible and as early as possible to avoid any discrepancies between a low fidelity concept and final product. Our design system should be built in a way that makes this job easier for our product teams. We want Design System components to be ready to go for use in rapid prototyping.
Please prepare examples of your prototyping work and how you’ve used Design System components to make this work easier.
