This position is based in Berlin, Germany. This can be either a full or a part time position. We are a remote-first company but will still have regularly occurring in-person meetings when the health situation allows.

We’re looking for an experienced legal counsel who has breadth of knowledge across business, contract and labour law.

We are looking for someone who is a safe pair of hands to guide us through the legal aspects of complex external and internal stakeholder issues and who is interested in working in an inclusive, collaborative, and transparent environment.


Mission as our legal counsel:

  • Provide legal counsel on diverse contractual matters and continuously improve contract templates and processes

  • Draft and review business contracts in partnership with internal and external stakeholders

  • Implement guidelines, processes and policies to comply with German law and control after implementation

  • When necessary liaise with external counsels to obtain advice on various matters (e.g. incorporation in other countries, EU and non EU) 

  • Provide proactive advice to the leadership team, especially with regards to German and EU law

  • Offer support on labour law processes and internal dispute resolution 

  • Offer support on customer dispute resolution

  • Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure legal implications of their operational decisions are known and managed

  • Ensure ESOP is legally compliant

  • Ensure terms and conditions of all contracts are German and EU law compliant

Outcomes for 2021:

  • Advise on how to best structure an effective employee share plan and execute this plan in accordance with German law

  • Be a major player in negotiating and constructing government contracts across Europe

  • Be a major player in negotiating and constructing contracts with academic institutions across Europe and the US

  • Develop internal relationships and a framework for proactively advising on the legal impact of operations in our product, marketing and student success departments

  • Assess legal implications of debt / equity financing decisions and manage all legal aspects associated with these decisions 

  • Look after all legal aspects of incorporating in the US and liaises with legal counterpart in the US to execute incorporation


  • German law degree from a German university (in Germany ‘Volljurist’) with minimum 5 years’ experience as the main legal counsel in an organisation, ideally including some experience in a fast growing startup environment AND global companies.

  • Good knowledge of German Civil Law and European law, contract law, labour law, GDPR, data protection and business law

  • Can work autonomously, proactively and flexibly in a fast moving environment

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Ability to convey complex legal issues to non legal experts

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional and remote teams in a collaborative manner

  • Strong contractual drafting and analytical skills, combined with pragmatism and business sense

  • Excellent language skills (fluent English and German is a must)
