For our Container Platform Team we are looking for a skilled Kubernetes DevOps Engineer who can help us to expand our K8s platforms on AWS and Azure, which are critical to prepare NN’s IT landscape for a scalable, stable and secure future. Over the past year Nationale Nederlanden (NN) has built a managed Kubernetes platform for their DevOps teams. This job opportunity resides within the central Cloud Services and Hosting / Cloud Factory / Container Platform Team. This team delivers a highly scalable, secure and qualitative managed Kubernetes platform as a serviced platform towards the BU DevOps teams that host their containerized solutions on top of it. As part of the Container Platform Team, you will make sure that the platforms’ foundation remains stable and that new features are developed in order to meet the growing demands. Since the Kubernetes platform is one of the target hosting solutions for NN, supporting its hybrid cloud strategy, you will be part of building the company’s future IT landscape.

“Building technology services through speed, quality and craftmanship to delight our customers.”

Your impact as a Kubernetes DevOps Engineer at NN

A year after the start of the NN Kubernetes program, NN is now managing over thirty Kubernetes clusters that are running multiple production workloads, including some of NN's critical customer facing portals. Although Kubernetes is the main component, it turned out that life cycle management and reliable delivery of changes to live platforms proved to be the most challenging part. The platform is delivered in a fully automated and secure way and includes all the required integrations with the rest of the NN IT landscape. The Container Platform Team uses concepts like fan-in/fan-out cluster deployments, platform integration tests, monitoring, alerting and feature flagging to deliver their qualitative and highly scalable platform. All-in-all there are fifteen components that provide all the platform features and services, so NN had to get creative to make sure that we keep it up to date.

The managed Kubernetes platform is now available on AWS based on EKS, the team is now building a similar service on Azure using AKS. Once the platform is available on both of NN's public cloud hosting platforms; it is all about continuous improvement, adding additional features to our platform based on the CNCF landscape (like service mesh and serverless containers) and accelerating the adoption of Kubernetes and containerization at the BU DevOps teams. The latter will include a lot of coaching and technical handson guidance to migrate more of NN's critical workloads to the public cloud. Are you the engineer who is going to join us throughout this journey?
