What will you do?
As a Front-end Engineer you will work on building and enhancing our user facing web site. Your work will involve creating more complex pieces of user interaction such as online calculators and applications, you will also focus on enhancing the experience of our content editors to help them create content for our customers.
We will provide the opportunity to work beyond customer features to help improve our security, testing, delivery pipelines and provide solutions to common problems. We will look to you to provide technical solutions, champion agile practices, DevOps approaches and work with other team members to translate high level requirements into epics, stories and tasks.
What technology will you use?
Our main customer facing website is built using a modern content management system (epiServer), most frontend work is completed independently of this system without many imposed constraints.
We aren't prescriptive on technology choices and prefer to provide autonomy to teams, giving them ability to experiment. The current user facing site is built using:
More recently we have been looking at a proof of concept using Angular elements and GitHub actions. There is scope to responsibly change technologies as we progress with new work.
How we work?
Engineers within Group Digital work in small, cross-functional teams of testers, front-end engineers, back-end engineers, product owners, business analysts and scrum masters. The teams use agile methodologies to iteratively create shippable software, using the workflow which works best for their product.
Our engineers currently work on MacBook Pros or developer-grade Dell laptops running Linux or Windows. We provide appropriate equipment to make sure it's possible to work from any of our offices, or from home when necessary.
We have been working fully remotely over the lockdown period and have found it to be successful. In the future we aim to operate a mix of remote and office-based working, the final details of which are still to be confirmed. We are committed to retaining an office presence to help with team collaboration and personal interaction.
What is important to us?
Continuous improvement is the driver behind everything we do - we experiment, we measure and we learn to create better products.
Transparency, honesty and collaboration are crucial, as is the willingness to take ownership of our work.
Communication is also vital to maintaining a healthy atmosphere in our teams. Every member of the team needs to be communicative, supportive and approachable. While we all understand the importance of having quiet, uninterrupted time, your responsibility to your team includes more than just writing code.
Simply put, if you’re someone who cares about the work that you do and the people that you work with, then you’ll fit right in.
