The OPS Engineer actively participates in the SCRUM meetings and monitors, manages, tests and deploys one or more applications noting the detailed technical behavior and performance across all aspects of the application to proactively identify and prevent operational problems. The OPS Engineer continuously improves the automation of deployment, integrated testing, and scripts to make automatic deployments up to production easier. The OPS Engineer  manages the compliance to operational risk policies by safeguarding the Definition of Done for each release.

The DevOps team can look towards the OPS engineer to take test automation, deployment automation and scripting to the next level and help them improve.

Who are you?

You are a driven IT Engineer with excellent analytical skills. You understand the complete stack from application to hardware. You understand the detailed workflow of the application, expected transactional volumes, the detailed technical behavior of application servers and databases and the importance of maintaining a high security profile, safeguarding the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of ING data and information assets.

You have very good social and communication skills. You feel a personal responsibility for the quality of your application and its reliability, and you work together with your colleagues across your domain. You have a 'no nonsense' getting-things-done mentality and you voice your concerns when you have them.

You have experience with Azure DevOps, preferably within the ING environment (OCD, RCEC, SOLL etc.). You know your way around ansible scripting, and you automate any mundane tasks you run into with scripts as soon as you see an opportunity to do so, resulting in a mostly automated pipeline.

What does an OPS Engineer do?

  • Supports several applications during business hours.
  • Monitors the availability and performance of the services
  • Configures and implements Monitoring Tooling to enable 24x7 monitoring of the entire technology stack using appropriate Event Alerts
  • Monitors a system, including interfaces, databases, middleware, (virtual) operating system and hardware. This primarily applies to the Production environments but in a less formal way is relevant for the Acceptance environments as well.
  • Provides 2nd-line support, i.e. resolves incidents
  • Executes deployment and rollback scripts in the Acceptance and Production environment and is able to migrate these to the new Azure DevOps stack, whilst automating as much of it as possible.
  • Determines impact of ING Infra changes, and patch schedules and takes appropriate actions
  • Plays an active role in the Continuous Delivery process to improve the time-to-market delivery for quickly adding business value by delivering the teams business-solutions. This includes automation of testing.
  • Perform Risk Analysis for reported security events,
  • Audit and verify granted user access (SOLL/IST) resulting in adjusted user access
  • Has experience with Docker & Kubernetes as we will migrate to a container platform (Openshift).
  • Monitors that system security complies to ING standards and policies
  • Is part of standby shift that offers 24x7 support.
  • Collects and registers auditable evidence material that complies to Key Controls as defined in ING IT Minimum Standards in appropriate tools (currently OCD) and ensures that it remains up-to-date

Your profile

  • Your key competencies: excellent team player, persistent, service oriented, eager to learn, you focus on results, resolving conflicts.
  • Able to keep oversight of complex processes in a constantly changing environment, and/but deliver results
  • You love to deep dive technology, searching for root causes of issues and incidents and to resolve them.
  • Knowledge and experience (3- 5 years) with operations activities (preferably within ING).
  • You are able to develop and tune efficient and maintainable code with the right balance between solving the problem at hand and not over-engineering your solution.
  • Experience with monitoring end/or debugging and/or performance tuning of applications.
  • Good knowledge of implementation of security measures (knowledge of ING Key IT Risk Controls is a preferred).
  • Understanding of Unix/Linux, scripting, Docker, Kubernetes Unit Testing/Maven/Kotlin automated deployment (CDaaS / TFS / Azure DevOps)
  • Knowledge of relational databases (e.g. Oracle)
  • Good understanding of Market Risk methodologies, practices, regulations and FM products (preferably within ING)
  • Flexible with respect to working pattern/ hours.
  • Great English communication skills, verbal as well as written.
  • Bachelor or Master degree
