We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated senior hardware engineer to play a central role in the definition, design and production of Apple’s next generation standard server and storage server platforms. Storage Platform Lead : Hardware Engineering lead for Server and/or Server Storage Platforms for hyperscale data center environments Storage Server Architecture : You define the detailed design requirements, specifications, and electrical and hardware requirements for future IS storage platforms and components. Key influencer within Apple’s Internet Services and IT teams for the Hardware Roadmap Maintains familiarity with industry technology and trends, assessing areas that could be intercepted into future designs. You will define power, management and control interfaces within the IS platforms to ensure use and consistency among vendors. Also responsible for system level interface connection definition to any rack level or data center management control plane. You will work alongside the IS Advanced technology team to integrate approved technologies into hardware designs. Work in tandem with Apple GDCS power team to guarantee future datacenter power topologies are understood and clear paths to adoption are in place for approved designs. Responsible for defining key firmware components required for IS system PCAs. i.e. Hardware CPLD/PAL/FPGA code controlling GPIO mapping, power sequencing, etc. Works hand in hand with System Design partners to review layout/schematics to ensure industry standards are followed. Responsible for Hardware Engineering Lab, defining equipment and capabilities Works closely with the Engineering Hardware Tech to test, evaluate hardware platforms. Electrical HW point of contact during issue debug and root cause analysis. Works with system vendors and industry technology providers (Intel, AMD, etc) as necessary. Leads complex hardware debug activities in the IS hardware lab. Engages with IS HW Engineering team to ensure future systems provide the right mix of management capabilities, performance tuning and debug-ability Involved in trade off decisions involving efficiency, cost, manufacturability, signal integrity, etc. Makes recommendation to management. Works with key technology suppliers to know detail roadmaps, capabilities, benefits, etc. Integrates Industry standard methodologies into IS Hardware designs. Industry presence and involvement in hardware initiatives within the industry like Open Compute or Open 19.

Skills & requirements

  • 7+ years of electrical server hardware design
  • Advanced work experience in PCA schematic collection
  • Advanced background in PCB layout and layout reviews
  • Advanced experience and skill with SAS / SATA / NVMe protocols and analyzers
  • Advanced experience with PCIe and SAS bus layout for PCB/A design
  • Extensive understanding of PCB layout rules/constraints/guidelines for SAS bus
  • Preferred experience in 2P Intel Motherboard architecture and design
  • Advanced skill in high speed signal design and optimization
  • Experience with HSS integrity verification
  • Experience as the lead engineer responsible for all aspects of the design and manufacturing of a high speed PCB/A
  • Experience with working with outsourced ODM/OEMs in designing a product
  • Experience with using high speed Logic Analyzers and Oscilloscopes
  • Validated Background in writing and/or reviewing hardware requirements documents
  • Past career experience in writing or reviewing PCB/A Specifications
  • Experience with CPU, DDR Voltage Regulator Design
  • Experience with server hardware bring up, debug and troubleshooting
  • Experience writing and reviewing Verilog CPLD code
  • Experience collaborating with Server System BIOS and BMC firmware engineers
  • Experience with hyper-scale/scale-out server / storage server design and associated cost savings, feature optimizations
  • Experience crafting high drive count storage sub-systems is a must
  • Familiarity and experience with Open Hardware designs such as Open Compute and Open 19” are a plus
