OVERVIEW

Modern Treasury is seeking a talented and motivated attorney to join our team as Commercial Counsel. This role is based in San Francisco.   As Modern Treasury’s second lawyer, you will make an immediate impact: you’ll successfully close deals with customers, partners and vendors, help Modern Treasury launch new products and features, and work with Sales, Bank Partnerships, Finance and Operations teams on a wide range of deals and initiatives. 

This role will report directly to the Head of Legal. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in developing the legal function at a company named one of Y Combinator’s Top 50 startups. You will have many opportunities to make a difference and grow with your fellow Modernos.

What You Will Do:

• Draft, negotiate and close customer deals, partnering closely with Sales and Finance. 
• Work on contracts across partnerships, vendor agreements, NDAs and more.
• Create and update core company legal templates.
• Provide advice to business & product teams on IP, privacy and regulatory issues.
• Improve legal tools & processes.
• Help build a high-performing legal function at a fast-growing startup!

 You Will Have:

• JD and California Bar admission in good standing (or qualified for and willing to maintain Registered In-House Counsel status with California State Bar)
• 4+ years of experience with commercial contracts or SaaS (law firm or in-house). 
• Passion for closing deals in a fast-moving environment.
• Interest in Fintech and payments - and desire to learn.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Strong judgment and integrity.
• Nice to have: Privacy, FinTech and/or Product counseling experience

During your first week you will:

• Onboard with our team
• Start learning our product and business
• Read our favorite industry primers
• Become familiar with our legal templates and tools

During your first six weeks you will:

• Close your first deals!
• Start building partnerships with Sales and other teams

During your first six months you will:

• Start taking ownership of deal templates and playbooks
• Make improvements to deal processes
• Help build out the legal service desk at Modern Treasury
